| Other species of native grasses and legumes are adapted in Zone 1 such as Pine bluegrass Poa scabrella, California fescue Festuca californica, Squirreltail Sitanion jubatum-Sitanion hystrix, Junegrass Koeleria cristata. Native species generally occur as components in a native land or range ecosystem and are rarely planted in pure stands. For specific recommendations for habitat mitigation, native plantings and seed availability, please call Cebeco International Seeds, Inc. for options. (1-800-445-2251). | |
NOTES: Cool-Humid Marine conditions prevail in this region. Alfalfa is poorly adapted in this region because of lack of heat units, acidic soils and generally wet soil conditions. Fall plantings of cool season forage grasses is best to reduce summer annual grass and broadleaf weed encroachment. Planting must be completed early fall when soil temperatures are elevated and photoperiod long. Late plantings suffer from winter weed invasion, specifically Poa annua. Consider very early spring plantings when soil moisture is sufficient for germination and soil temperatures are favorable for good forage seed germination. Where dairy and sewer effluent are being utilized, broadleaf weed control will become a necessary part of management program. Consider legume component price to seeding based upon pasture management conditions. AU Triumph tall fescue and the family of ryegrasses are excellent users of excess nitrogen (re: non-point pollution).
