| NATIVE GRASS MIXTURE | |
| Zone 2 is coastal region around the world with hot, dry summer, mild foggy winters with varied climatic, edaphic and geographic conditions. On favorable soil sites where summer forage and wildlife habitat is desired, California oatgrass Danthonia californica, and the “New World” bluestem such as little bluestem Andropogon schizahyrium predominate. Little bluestem tolerates heavier soils better than most other North American tall grasses. This native bunchgrass grows to height of three (3) feet, tolerates vegetative removal and often has a rhizomatous growth habit. Other natives adapted to this region include tufted hairgrass Deschampsia caespitosa, slender hairgrass Deschampsia elongata in coastal estuaries, seeps, bogs, wetland sites and saline soils. Nodding needlegrass Stipa cernua, purple needlegrass Stipa pulchra, foothills needlegrass Stipa lepida are adapted to clay and loamy soil sites in Zone 2. Consider utilization of introduced natives such as QUATRO sheep fescue Festuca ovina, EUREKA and EUREKA II hard fescue Festuca longifolia, CINDY and CINDY LOU strong creeping red fescue Festuca rubra rubra as a less aggressive fine textured species in compatible mixtures with the tall native species. For specific recommendations for habitat mitigation, native plantings and seed availability, please call Cebeco International Seeds, Inc. for options (1-800-445-2251). | |
NOTES: Zone 2 is characterized by arid summer climate with marine influence during winter months. Warm season grasses such as bermudagrass, and buffalograss are often difficult to maintain as optimal forage because the lack of accumulated heat units for this C4 plant type. Poa annua encroachment is limiting factor in forage establishment programs because of mild winters and summer irrigation practices that encourage invasion. Nortron® can be effectively used to control Poa annua population. Caution should be noted when applied to non dormant warm season forage species.
