NOTES: The prairies of the Great Plains in North America form the largest area of true grass range in the world. Zone 5 is dominated by the warm season short-grass prairie types such as blue gramma Bouteloua gracilis, buffalograss Buchloe dactyloides and windmill grass Chloris verticulata. The western sections of Zone 7 & 8 are dominated by the tall-grass prairie types such as big bluestem Andropogon gerardii, switchgrass Panicum virgatum and indiangrass Sorghastrum nutans. There is a growing trend in the southern section of Zone #5 to identify perennial cool-season grass species that will provide greater dry matter yield than the adapted or introduced warm season species. University extension scientists are presently evaluating meadow, smooth, and mountain bromegrass Bromus spp., pubescent, slender, tall, intermediate and jose wheatgrass for this purpose. For specific recommendations for habitat mitigation, native plantings and seed availability, please call Cebeco International Seeds, Inc. for options. (1-800-445-2251).
