| NATIVE GRASS MIXTURE | |
| Zone 11 is dominated by short-grass prairie. In contrast to Zone 12 this region is not only dry but has a distinctly shorter growing season. Therefore, natives have developed a unique dehydration avoidance mechanism for survivability. Natives are typically decumbent, compact in growth, winter dormant and narrow bladed to reduce evapotranspiration. Buchloe spp., Bouteloua spp., Hilaria spp., Eragrostis spp., Muhlenbergia spp. and Sporobolus spp. dominate this region. For specific recommendations for habitat mitigation, native plantings and seed availability, please call Cebeco International Seeds, Inc. for options. (1-800-445-2251). | |
NOTES: Zone 11 is the site of utilization of many of the annual clovers and medics in Australia, southern and central Africa. Under irrigated conditions, drought tolerant cool season grasses such as tall fescue, orchardgrass, hardingrass, bromegrass and many of the aggressive wheatgrasses provide abundant fall, spring and winter forage when the warm season forage species are winter dormant.
